A response to seeing the world untethered

The world has come to a very bad place and it has further still to fall. We now lay waste and mock the men and symbols of freedom’s last great war, when 400,000 of our fathers and brothers paid liberty’s highest cost. We sell our ports to kinsmen of the enemy. Representatives of a billion people murder and riot — today over old cartoons and older photographs — maybe tomorrow for showing your face. One of the leaders of the billion says he will obliterate a country, and he is deadly serious about it. Yet those charged with telling the story obsess to ignore it, to cover their ears and shout again and again the irreverent, the irrelevant, and the downright harmful. It seems to us that things are unlikely to change in this way without a large, clarifying, unpleasant event.

Where to turn to make sense out of it, or at least to feel not alone? Yeats always comes to mind:

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all convictions, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand…

Nice, but a bit heavy, yes? For some reason we thought of Robert Haas today. His political views have, undoubtedly, nothing in common with what you read here. Yet all today’s violent disconnections of words from reality brought to mind the far more peaceful Meditations at Lagunitas. Perhaps that’s what it was, a dream of peace.

    We open ourselves to charges of Islamophobes when we react because a company, founded in an Arab country, buys out another public company. The ports can still be protected if we assume that Homeland Security will be setting the rules for operation and monitoring the processes. Instead, we have a great opportunity to get some charges in at the Dems for being Islamophobic. this, coupled with Algore’s ditribe against the US, would be a greta opportunity to tunr the tables on the enemy… the MSM and Democrats.
