Reporting in these times

Washington Post:

Some West Africans believe that the day you die is one of the most important days of your life.

Amazingly, the average age of the reporters seems to be well above 25. Also, check out this NYT piece which could have come straight out of the scene with the mayor in Ghostbusters.

    “As of early September, with more than 1,800 confirmed Ebola deaths in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, there was still no coordinated global response. ”

    1800 deaths in countries with a combined population of 22,000,000. That just doesn’t sound that bad. What is that, maybe 1 in 12000? It’s hardly the Black Death.

    Yes, I understand it is a nasty, lethal virus and yes I understand government is not competent to cope with it, but having said that, it sounds like there is a lot more hype and scaremongering than danger.

    The media distorts everything and bends it to fit their political agenda. It makes it hard to discern what is really happening.
