Misc

(a) George MacDonald Fraser and Harry Flashman for future reference; (b) Roger Pielke on the nasty treatment accorded to his dad, Richard Lindzen and many others. Yuck.

Like Blackadder, Flashman turns English history into ‘ribald entertainment.’ When I was in college, I regularly turned to Flashman for relief from serious-minded history. Why? For the simple reason that the entire series is funny as all get-out. My favorites are Royal Flash, which stands Anthony Hope’s Prisoner of Zenda on its head, and Flashman at the Charge, which actually makes the Crimean War make sense.
