12 years and counting

12 years ago oil went to $147 a barrel and took down a lot of companies. Now it’s happening again with oil at $20 a barrel and so forth.

Of course there is going to be money to made long term in aviation. What substitute is there for the miracle of jet transport?

I have a bit of a dilemma on rescuing carriers with taxpayer money. My initial thinking is that the carriers should be allowed to crash and burn (figuratively) and let the vultures come in and scavenge the pieces. OTOH, a lot of their current woes are beyond their control, what with government edicts curtailing travel.

In the big national bailout to come, my crystal ball sees the airline industry doing quite well as they are so well connected to government and the administrative state, money will be able to find its way to them very quickly.

It’s small business I worry about. By the time the money is allocated and a way is created to disperse it, many small businesses may be gone.

At least that’s my view from the peanut gallery.
