Oompa Loompa, SwiftBoatVets, and Rathergate are the Same Story: Mainstream Media’s Ineffective Partisanship with Kerry and the DNC
To cover the old ground, the Mainstream Media is 12 to 1 for Kerry in the Beltway. Newsweek’s Evan Thomas said the elite media were good for 15 points for Kerry in the election. How the mighty have fallen.
– Oompa Loompa, despite everyone knowing about the Pumpkin President, was not covered in the decaying New York Times, Washington Post, or other elite media outlets, despite being on Drudge, all over the internet, and on Rush and talk radio — it’s a story about lying, by the way, as reported in the Harvard Crimson
— SwifBoatVets, about which John Kerry has managed not to answer a single question for almost two months (!), was ignored by the Mainstream Media for several weeks, until the Blogosphere made that impossible; SwiftBoatVets is a story about candidate Kerry’s integrity and honesty, and its charges are virtually entirely true — as Kerry’s biographer Doug Brinkley put it, Kerry “is not the war hero we all thought he was.”
– Rathergate is a story about the Mainstream Media’s working with the Democratic Party to bring down Kerry’s opponent by any means possible, including the use of obviously forged documents supplied by partisan hacks, in prime time, under the banner of one of the great brand names in TV, 60 Minutes; CBS thought it could get away with it because the White House did not immediately question the authenticity of the documents.
These are all different aspects of the same story. The Mainstream Media blocks stories that make their chosen candidate look dishonest or foolish, and fraudulently creates the same sort of story against their GOP adversary. The Mainstream Media think they are gatekeepers, keeping the truth about Kerry outside the gate so the public won’t see it (SwiftBoatVets, Oompa Loompa), and protecting the crooks and cranks and forgers (Rathergate) who want to harm the Media’s enemy, Bush. Thirty years ago, as we have detailed, the Mainstream Media could get away with this, but now they have become worse than corrupt; they are ineffective.
As I never tire of saying, the gatekeepers are living in a dream world. They are guarding a Maginot Line, and the American people who use the internet, listen to talk radio, or watch Fox just bypass these old, irrelevant guardians of falsehood.
The New Media have won and the Mainstream Media still doesn’t know there’s a war going on.
