The factions sure did multiply: the aftermath of McCain-Feingold

Back when it was passed in 2002 and signed in stealth by President Bush, so that he did not have to run against the Mainstream Media as well as the Democrats in the midterm election, we thought that McCain Feingold was unconstitutional foolishness — the work of boys will too much time on their hands and too little of consequence to keep them occupied.

Earlier this year when the panel of judges ruled 2 to 1 to “mend it, don’t end it,” we were pretty shocked that appellate judges had a hard time understanding the phrase “Congress shall make no law.”

Well, pernicious or not, at least McCain Feingold has, thank God, been spectacularly ineffective. The NYT via Captain Ed:

In total, this year’s races for Congress and the White House are estimated to have cost roughly $3.9 billion, about a third more than they did four years ago, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks campaign spending.

No doubt Congress will produce even thicker and more foolish laws than the last one, which enabled one Democrat to contribute $29 million, and one anti-Kerry group to use $500,000 to unprecendented effect. It would save everyone a lot of trouble — and money, while we’re at it — if these ineffective “reformers” would just stand down and give us all a break.
