The white Christian cavil and cavalcade

Pittsburgh Tribune Review on an appearance by GOP chief Ken Mehlman, during which he commented on some remarks by the DNC chairman:

Dean recently characterized Republicans as “pretty much a white, Christian party.” During an earlier event yesterday, Mehlman poked fun at Dean’s comment. At a reception for him by the Republican Jewish Coalition, held at the Duquesne Club, Mehlman quipped: “Good afternoon, my fellow white Christians.”

Six months ago, TIME Magazine named Powerline its “Blog of the Year.” Here was some of the commentary by TIME from our archives:

When you read Power Line, you feel as if you’re part of a community, a like-minded righteous few….How can a blog that caters to the right, the political majority who in fact run this country, make Republicans feel as if they’re part of a proud, persecuted minority? The villain here isn’t the political opposition. It’s the left-leaning Mainstream Media, a looming specter that is vilified so routinely on Power Line, it’s referred to in shorthand as the MSM.

Well, TIME had it almost right: it is both the Democratic political apparatus and its megaphone, the MSM, which united form the opposition. Together they create the aura, for those in the liberal cocoon, that they are still the majority, despite their abysmal decade-long track record of electoral failure at every level of government. What they have lost in numbers, they have gained in self-righteous derision of their opponents. Hence the caricature of Republicans as the evil spawn of a confederate redneck and Eustace Tilly. To illustrate the point, this parody speech by Peggy Noonan, containing statements by Hillary Clinton and Howard Dean, would, if given by Ken Mehlman, have probably resulted in calls for his resignation:

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. I want to speak this evening about how I see the political landscape. Let me jump right in. The struggle between the Republican Party and the Democratic Party is a struggle between good and evil–and we’re the good. I hate Democrats. Let’s face it, they have never made an honest living in their lives. Who are they, really, but people who are intent on abusing power, destroying the United States Senate and undermining our Constitution? They have no shame. But why would they? They have never been acquainted with the truth. You ever been to a Democratic fundraiser? They all look the same.”

Given by a Democrat, the above speech says what many party leaders think, and these sentiments appear unremarkable to a lot of the MSM. Similarly, in our view, Dean’s remarks about the GOP as a “white, Christian party” pretty much reflect the views of much of the MSM and senior party leaders.

Our view is that the criticism of Dean’s recent statement comes from the fact that it would appear to be electorally unhelpful to Democrats, as party leaders themselves have said. Perhaps party leaders fear that it would further solidify gains among white Christians for the Republican Party. We look at things differently: we think Mehlman is onto something potentially big for all people who are or would be Republicans. We think that Mehlman, and other GOP leaders, should begin every address to African American, Asian, Jewish, Muslim, Hispanic Republican group, and others with “Good afternoon, my fellow white Christians,” or something similar.

You too can be part of the only minority completely unprotected by law or custom from abuse by the Democratic leadership — the few, the proud, the Republicans. Well, maybe not the few.

Brian Wilson from FNC (who else would have the balls?) went to the heart of Dean’s hateful bigotry today when he asked Dean, at a impromtu press conference with Harry “Loser” Reid, “Do you hate white Christians?” Dean hates Republicans. Dean believes all Republicans are white Christians. The question seems an obvious one.

Of course, Dean and Reid ignored the question and their fellow-travelers in the MSM bodily forced Wilson from the room.
