Cognitive dissonance: African-Americans, Democrats, and religion

It is usually food for thought when poll findings directly contradict each other, and no more so than in this Pew poll showing that an amazing 75% of black Americans think that liberals have gone too far in trying to keep religion out of schools and the government:

75% is an extraordinary number. However, the Pew study also contains findings showing that this disapproval of liberals by African-Americans does not translate into criticism of the institutional Democratic Party:

Interestingly, three-quarters of African Americans also see liberals pushing too far in keeping religion out of schools and government. It is important to note, however, that this negative perception of non-religious liberals is not linked to views of the Democratic Party among blacks. Blacks are nearly twice as likely as whites to say the Democratic Party is friendly toward religion and, by a 58%-24% margin, blacks say the Democratic Party, not the GOP, is most concerned with protecting religious values in the country.

Holy Nancy Pelosi and the ACLU! This is a very important issue where black Democrats are totally at odds with the MoveOn.org crowd, the ACLU and the radical secularists. As you recall, perhaps the single most important predictor of whether you voted for Bush or Kerry was church attendance. 2/3 of non-worshippers went Kerry; 2/3 of churchgoers went Bush. If we were Karl Rove or Ken Mehlman, we just might find this to be a very interesting wedge issue to work like the dickens. (HT: Powerline)

One Response to “Cognitive dissonance: African-Americans, Democrats, and religion”

  1. DL Says:

The Democrats have very skillfully milked the race game and the abused seem to be unwilling or unable to throw off the schackles of dependancy upon the Nanny state. Not only do their liberal leaders attack their very beliefs in the area of religion, they also keep the blacks locked into many inferior public schools by refusing to let them have the vouchers they so badly want. I often also wonder how the leftist god of abortion disproportionately hurts the black community.
I have been waiting a lifetime to see this community join society as equally free productive citizens. The criteria I use is that they no longer need vote so disproportionately for those that do so much harm to them.
