My sharia amour

What is it with the Canadians? One minute are so tolerant that they want sharia to become law for Muslims in family affairs, and the next minute they are protesting about it. Here’s what the government said last December in a report by former attorney-general Ms. Marion Boyd, via Globe and Mail. Here’s part of her sound reasoning:

Ms. Boyd determined that Ontario should continue to allow religious-based arbitrations and mediations, including sharia, and recommended strengthening protections by requiring both parties to first seek independent legal advice.

Now there are protests in Canada, though it looks like only a few people:

If that’s the scale of protest in Canada, then we say: bring on the Dar al-Islam! Sharia is not at all a bad deal for half the population of Canada, namely the guys. It is true there were some Muslim groups who campaigned against the findings of the oh-so tolerant Boyd, but what do they know: they’re just women:

It is important to understand the terms “Sharia” and “Muslim” law. Accurately, Sharia is a comprehensive religious term used to define how Muslims should live, while fiqh or jurisprudence is limited to the laws promulgated by Muslim scholars, based on their understanding of the Quran and the practices of the Prophet. Some Muslims, by using the term Sharia immediately cause believing Muslims to hesitate in expressing any opposition, as no Muslim wants to be against the Sharia….

Most proponents of Muslim law accept that men have the right to marry up to four wives; that they can divorce unilaterally; that children belong to the patriarchal family; that women must be obedient and seek the male’s permission for many things; that if the wife is “disobedient” the husband can “discipline” the wife; that daughters require their father’s permission to marry and she can be married at any time after puberty. A wife does not receive any maintenance except for a period of 3 months to one year and most agree that the children should go to the father usually at ages 7 for boys and 9 for girls. If the wife wants a divorce she goes to court, while the husband has the right to repudiate the union without recourse to courts. Inheritance favours males….

We applaud Ms. Marion Boyd. What is wrong with any of that? Four wives, a little old fashioned “discipline,” and the ability to marry off the daughters at 13. What could be better? However, in the interest of fairness, we do acknowledge that there could be a few minor complications, such as these:

Honey, get your burka

Run, Mukhtaran Mai, run

Betcha $20 that doesn’t draw blood

However, these issues are nothing that can’t be cured by press censorship or intimidation of the victims. No problem, Canada. Enjoy!
