Rathergate: the paper size is wrong, wrong, wrong
We just read the astonishingly arrogant and ignorant comments of Marvin Kalb on Rathergate, in which he says “I have yet to see the evidence” that the documents were forged. John Hinderaker responded extensively. One thing he did not include, however, is that the memos forged by Bill Burkett between August 14 and August 21, 2004 were composed on paper that was the wrong size. In 1972, government paper was 8 x 10 1/2, not 8 1/2 x 11. Therefore, the forged documents would have been off-center, and showed the edges of the original paper when copied, which didn’t happen. A minor point perhaps, but this has bothered us since we first noted it on, um, September 9, 2004. Veteran journalist Marvin Kalb has had more than a year to figure this out.
