The EU offers to create 58 jobs to help France relieve its “youth” crisis

Reuters:

The European Union has offered France 50 million euros ($58.5 million) to help it tackle problems in its suburbs that have provoked unrest, EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Sunday. The main challenge facing France in dealing with impoverished suburbs was to create youth employment, Barroso said in a radio interview. “The biggest problem is unemployment. The best social politics is to create employment. That is the main thing. When you have 60 percent of youths unemployed in suburbs it is a problem,” Barroso told Europe 1 radio.

Well, maybe we are a bit harsh. Maybe the government bureaucracies involved will be more efficient than we give them credit for. Maybe each government hand-out, make-work job won’t cost a million dollars apiece by the time the funds actually get disbursed. Maybe the cost will only be $100,000 a job. Golly, that would mean that the EU will be helping France create an extra 580 jobs. Hopefully, the EU will give that amount year after year after year. If those 580 “youths” repair and repaint one car a day that they helped destroy, they would have jobs for the next 27 years! Sounds good to us.
