The harm done by Boccardi / Thornburgh is almost worse than Rathergate

We said on January 10 that the Thornburgh-Boccardi report on Rathergate was deeply flawed, since it did not specifically and unconditionally state the obvious, that the Bill Burkett-forged Rathergate memos were cheap, inept, obvious frauds. Time and again these blue-ribbon panels of retirees skirt clear language in deference to the sensitivities of friends and associates. Now we have to sit through Mary Mapes’ hawking her book on CNN while some participants in the discussion pretend that there are two sides to the argument. More importantly, the casual viewer — not to mention BDS victim — is allowed to think it was all a matter of opinion whether the documents were fabricated. Such is the legacy of not wanting to cause embarrassment at a board meeting.
