Defeatism then and now — guess who

Now: “It’s my belief that we should get out now….We had an opportunity to say to the world and Iraqis after the hurricane disaster that Mother Nature has not treated us well and we find ourselves missing the amount of money it takes to help these poor people out of their homeless situation and rebuild some of our most important cities in the United States…Therefore, we are going to have to bring our troops home….[having said] our hearts are with you.”……”I think we could have been able to retire with honor. In fact, I think we can retire with honor anyway.”

Then: “To say that we are mired in stalemate seems the only realistic, yet unsatisfactory, conclusion. On the off chance that military and political analysts are right, in the next few months we must test the enemy’s intentions, in case this is indeed his last big gasp before negotiations. But it is increasingly clear to this reporter that the only rational way out then will be to negotiate, not as victors, but as an honorable people who lived up to their pledge to defend democracy, and did the best they could.”

Notice that the speaker’s utter lack of confidence in the US military hasn’t changed a bit in 38 years. Can you believe it’s been 38 years?
