US troops in Iraq — 2009 versus 2062

The NYT and WaPo both noted President Bush’s statement that sounded a lot like troops will be in Iraq in 2009 and beyond. We want to remind you once again, as we did last November at the time of Jack Murtha’s statements, that the US still has more troops in Germany, Japan and South Korea than it does in Iraq:

Unlike, it seems, everyone else on the planet, we hope that successive Iraqi governments want the US to maintain a permanent presence in that country. Follwing the WWII example, we could then expect US troops in Iraq at least through 2062, which could protect US interests and be a positive force in the hoped-for transition of that region away from barbarism.

  1. Bart Reagan Says:

The difference might be that in Germany, Japan and South Korea we didn’t preemptively invade for absolutely no valid reason other than the plans of PNAC. The difference might be that the citizenry of Germany, Japan and South Korea aren’t showing their dislike of our occupation by blowing us up. As great and mighty as our country is, it is not up to us to bestow freedom on the world. It is that attitude that makes the extremists want to blow us up in the first place. Who decided our 200 year old country has the duty or the right to “transition” anybody, much less a region with 5000 years of history, the freaking seat of humanity (can you say Sumeria? Babylon?)
