Ray Nagin and the deplorable Blanco call out the National Guard

AP reports the latest insanity from the dynamic duo of bad government:

Acting at the mayor’s request, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Monday she would send National Guard troops and state police to patrol the streets of New Orleans after a bloody weekend in which six people were killed. “The situation is urgent,” Blanco said. “Things like this should never happen, and I am going to do all I can to stop it.”

One hundred National Guardsmen with law enforcement experience and 60 state police officers were to be sent to the city Tuesday. Up to 200 more troops would be deployed after that, said Denise Bottcher, the governor’s spokeswoman. Earlier Monday, Mayor Ray Nagin had asked for as many as 300 National Guardsmen and 60 state police officers.

Six people were killed in New Orleans and now they are all hot to call out the National Guard? These people are out of their minds. There were 16,900 murders in the US last year, and many cities sported big numbers — but we have not heard about them calling out the National Guard:

In Philadelphia, homicides jumped from 330 in 2004 to 377 in 2005, a 14 percent increase, according to the FBI. Murders climbed from 272 to 334 in Houston, a 23 percent rise, and from 131 to 144 in Las Vegas, a 10 percent increase…

Murders rose from 59 to 104 in Birmingham, Ala., up 76 percent; from 59 to 85 in Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, N.C., a 44 percent spike; from 89 to 126 in Kansas City, Mo., a 42 percent rise; from 87 to 122 in Milwaukee, a 40 percent jump; and from 79 to 109 in Cleveland, up 38 percent.

New Orleans’ police force is down a little over 20% to 1,375 cops, but its population has fallen to half of its pre-Katrina level of 465,000. So there are 75% more cops per capita in New Orleans today than there were a year ago — but now School Bus Nagin and the deplorable Blanco get into a panic and call out the Guard? Why couldn’t they figure out how to do it a year ago, when it was really necessary, instead of hiring a PR firm?

Maybe they’re rehearsing for hurricane season — or just maybe they really are as inept, foolish and dumb as they appear to be.

UPDATE

By the way, we believe that the reason that the deplorable Blanco was calling Deomcratic consutants rather than the National Guard last year during the immediate aftermath of Katrina was quite possibly a PR strategy on the part of the Democratic Party — the idea was to make Bush look bad by claiming that the National Guard was unavailable because they were in Iraq. We wrote about this last year. (The Party could try this stunt in Louisiana but not in Mississippi or Florida for obvious reasons.) Unfortunately, the storm proved far worse than was planned for, which turned a pretty good political idea into a fiasco. No such clever rationale occurs to us for this latest stunt, however.
