Losing the propaganda war…and more
Youssef Ibrahim was on Ian Masters’ Pacifica radio show this morning. He said that the US cable news channels with their 2 million viewers are dwarfed by Al Jazeera with 50 million daily viewers who see an endless and explicit parade (not seen on US TV) of gore and carnage, caused by the US and Israel 24/7. Ibrahim also said that this Lebanon war is a disaster for Israel becuase Israel has not dominated Hezbollah with overwheming force, due to the military incompetence of Israel’s political leadership. Hence it will be a great propaganda victory for Hezbollah, and will further inspire and empower Iran.
In addition, Lawrence Petak, a former CBS news correspondent based in Egypt, said that the Grand Mufti of Egypt, on of the most respected of Sunni theologians and a government employee, said during Friday prayers that Hezbollah’s actions were not terrorism, but defense of their country. This marks a greater acceptance of Shiite Hezbollah by Sunni leaders than previously seen in this war.
UPDATE
Haaretz doesn’t think the military campaign is going that well either.

Once again history tells us the future. The lesson of World War II was that aerial bombardment makes the targets angry at the people dropping the bombs. Yet every time this happens again, we act all surprised.

I don’t think you want Israel to show complete domination over Hizbollah. I suspect that type of posture would create a brittle perspective that may entice an escalation from Syria/Iran or another Arab country.
Israel is going for the knockout of Hizbollah and with it, Syrian and Iran influence. Israel want to grind them down. The surrounding Arab countries also want Hizbollah/Syria/Iran to be beat back.
This low intensity war will continue for some time. It will expose the fallacy of the UN, the EU, Syria, and Iran.
