Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gave a new meaning to the term “bully pulpit” as he closed his speech to the UN General Assembly with a prayer for the end of the world. It was met with great applause, by the way:

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

From the beginning of time, humanity has longed for the day when justice, peace, equality and compassion envelop the world. All of us can contribute to the establishment of such a world. When that day comes, the ultimate promise of all Divine religions will be fulfilled with the emergence of a perfect human being who is heir to all prophets and pious men. He will lead the world to justice and absolute peace.

“O mighty Lord, I pray to you to hasten the emergence of your last repository, the promised one, that perfect and pure human being, the one that will fill this world with justice and peace.

The “perfect and pure human being” that Ahmadinejad is referring to is the 12th imam, the Mahdi, or the “guided one,” who will usher in the end of the world as we know it, and bring about the univeral rule of Islam. He is prophesied to appear during a time of tremendous “calamities and misfortunes,” and some say Jesus will appear with him in Mecca to pray.

No doubt the intellectual sophisticates will laughingly dismiss this statement by Ahmadinejad in the same way that they laughed off his Der Spiegel interview in which he made clear that he did not believe in the Holocaust, and that, in any event, the Jews had to get out of Israel: “How droll that little man is!” For our part, we take our millennarian lunatics seriously.
