Once FDR decided the purpose of government was to rule, rather than referee, their fate was determined. They're now dominated by the sort of people for whom power is an end in itself, and committed themselves to the values they currently espouse: - The end justifies the means. - Party before country. - Power before principle. - "Humanity" before human beings. Their self-interest and amorality don't make them strong - they makes them a rag on the wind, available for anyone, including their enemies, to pick up and use. I just wish I wasn't seeing signs of the same transformation in the Republican Party. Thank God for the few principled men we still have devoting themselves to governing.
