It’s all special effects now, in Hollywood and politics

We were reading a piece by the Anchoress that said the art has gone out of politics. That seems correct to us. Politics has devolved into bad entertainment, just like the movies have.

We’re caught in a crazy car chase sequence at the moment, the kind of thing you see reliably towards the end of movies aimed at teenagers. The pace is sustained by the “glee some press types feel about the current storyline,” with the bad guys chasing the good guys — who are finally ahead for the first time in years. Periodically, the MSM set off squibs and IED’s, special effects to prevent the bad guys from catching up. These are the October Surprises.

Years ago, Fred Astaire did things differently: “Not all the dances were filmed in a single shot, but most of them were.” He shot the “Never Gonna Dance” sequence in Swingtime 47 times to get it right. Practiced elegance. The Anchoress refers to the similar practiced elegance of FDR as a symbol of a world lost.

Now it’s all quick cuts and special effects, in movies and election season politics. The Party of Hollywood is trying to use its magic in 2006 to get the voters it doesn’t like to not vote. It won’t work with us. We agree with W.C. Fields: “Hollywood is the gold cap on a tooth that should have been pulled out years ago.” Does his remark equally describe many in the Party of Hollywood?
