A lighter moment?

A book review by Thomas Mitchell in the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

You have to give Al Gore credit for one thing: Truth in labeling. His new book, “The Assault on Reason,” is precisely that…

His grasp of history is a bit slippery, too. “It is simply an insult to those who came before us and sacrificed so much on our behalf to imply that we have more to be fearful of than they did,” Gore writes. “In spite of the dangers they confronted, they faithfully protected our freedoms.”

Yep, our ancestors faithfully protected freedom with the Alien and Sedition Acts, the suspension of habeas corpus, jailing of people who argued the draft violated the 13th Amendment, Japanese internment, the Smith Act and various red scares and blacklistings.

By contrast, we note that the reader reviews at Amazon are typically quite favorable. Example:

“Gore’s work, THE ASSAULT ON REASON, is must reading for all who embrace the principles and tenents of the American Democratic Experiment. Jefferson, Madison, and Payne all rightfully asserted that if democracy was to flourish it required a free, open, and courageous press; coupled with an educated and active population and electorate. Gore clearly explains how we as a people have been so intellectually and politically terrorized by the political terrorists of America, i.e., the Bush fanatics and neo-fascists Bushies, that we as a nation have lost our way and fallen victim to those who would rob us of our freedoms.”

And they say there’s a civil war in Iraq!
