What is the rationale?

What precisely is the rationale for the US’s immigration policy from Somalia? Somalia is a backwards country of 11 million people with GDP per capita of maybe $100 a year ($600 PPP) in which businesses print their own money, so it is very hard to know for sure. Somalia has had no national government since 1991. According to the CIA, in June 2006, “a loose coalition of clerics, business leaders, and Islamic court militias known as the Supreme Council of Islamic Courts (SCIC) defeated powerful Mogadishu warlords and took control of the capital.” We have noted the results of these fine fellows’ taking control previously. The WaPo had an interesting piece from a Somali journalist on the culture he grew up in.

A number of Somalis came to the US as refugees, but it is obvious from many incidents now that there is virtually no overlap between their primitive, chaotic world, and the modern West. It would appear that the US is doing itself and these people no favors in its thoughtless and inhumane grafting of an alien culture onto the American urban landscape. If we are going to bring these people here, we owe it to them to remake them in the mold of American citizens in short order, and, if the US does not have the will or the resources to do so, then it should use the funds it is spending anyway to find a more satisfactory place for the refugees to settle. Laissez faire immigration with no follow up to create assimilation of the new population is cruel to both the immigrants and to the host communities.
