Question: if renowned Democratic Party adviser James Carville understands that every political and demographic group views illegal immigration as a big problem…..
…then why don’t the Republicans?

Class. The Republican Party elite, the RNC is mostly internationalist traders’ types, large corporations. Small business, tradesmen, labor are, at best, a tolerated annoyance. Further elites like low cost servants. Importing large numbers, drives down hourly pay rates for workers, trades, service allowing skilled couples to continue working with their household servant costs reduced.
In short, it is popular at the higher income, and disproportionally influential, brackets of both parties, and thus, it’s kind of a ‘let’s get together on this good thing’ agreement with the elites as a unified, albeit bickering, class

Maybe they do, but don’t care. Perhaps Republican elites have decided that the pickings are richer in a minority big-government party than in a majority small-government party.
“Class” says Paul from Florida. The first four postwar Republican Presidents–Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan–were born in modest Middle American circumstances. In contrast, the Bushes had reached the upper caste by the time GHW came along.
