Someone set us up the bomb

Here’s what the Democratic presidential candidate said about the “bomb” that fell on Pearl Harbor:

Throughout our history, America’s confronted constantly evolving danger, from the oppression of an empire, to the lawlessness of the frontier, from the bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor, to the threat of nuclear annihilation.

Both the video and the written speech contain — what exactly? A conflation of Hiroshima and Pearl Harbor? A misremembering of December 7, 1941? Or just another quite odd slip of the tongue?

Finally, what is this business about the “lawlessness of the frontier” as one of America’s “evolving dangers”? That just sounds cockamamie. Wasn’t the point of every oater and TV Western that brave and enterprising American pioneers settled and tamed the frontier, not reacted to it as an “evolving danger?”
