A self-inflicted problem for the media

The LA Times has a potentially politically damaging video of Senator Obama and won’t release it. If the video were of the Republican candidate, would we see such restraint? A reporter asked tough questions of Senator Biden. The TV station was promptly blacklisted. How would the press react if the GOP took such action? Similar problems run from the great to the trivial.

We understand that the MSM are in the tank for the Democratic ticket. That has always been the case in recent years. But this time around the media seem to have gone out of their way to avoid looking at areas of potential unpleasantness in their favored candidate. What will happen if and when the human Rorschach test fails them, when the air goes out of his absurdly grandiose promises? Will they be able to climb down? No.

We understand that the MSM are in the tank for the Democratic ticket. That has always been the case in recent years. But this time around the media seem to have gone out of their way…

This time around the media’s financial position has become dangerously precarious. In addition to its members’ ideology, institutional self-interest may be driving the MSM’s behavior.

From time to time I see conjectures that the MSM will ask a Democratic government for subsidies (financial and regulatory) to stay afloat. Based on how PBS and the NEA have fared, such subsidies would be reduced but not eliminated in the event that the GOP ever gets back into power. On balance the MSM would come out ahead.

It looks like the MSM needs regulation and strangulation of the interenet, along with mandated fairness doctrines to politicize the news. This in turn would generate large ad revenue from “competing” ideologies.

In a laissez faire atmosphere, the trend would be for people to get their news from an internet source of their liking. In order for the MSM to survive, the fragmentation of the mass media market needs to be stopped. MSM needs Big Brother to step in and mandate franchises on news content.

Without that franchise, AP, NYT, etc aren’t worth the paper they use to publish the news.
