Pakistan’s problems
James Traub has an article called “Can Pakistan be governed?” in the NYT Magazine. It is hard to follow all the ins and outs, but one sentence seems to capture the essence of the piece:
No democratic government in the history of Pakistan has been replaced by an orderly transition through a regularly scheduled election
Can Pakistan be governed? What a question. How about these: (a) can the northwest territories be governed? (b) can Kashmir be governed? (c) can Islamabad even be governed?
(Of course Pakistan can be governed — the question is by whom.)
