Funny, except for some small details

Taranto writes on Obamacare’s requirement that every individual in America be forced to purchase insurance:

Obama spent a lot of time in his speech last night demonizing insurance companies as cruel and money-hungry, while also calling for a law mandating the purchase of their product. Politicians have said similar things about, say, the tobacco industry. But so far as we know, no one has ever proposed forcing every American to smoke two packs a day…

The one consolation of losing our freedom is that if the ObamaCare mandate passed, it would be fun to see the look on all those silly young voters’ faces when they realize that the guy they so fervently supported is going to force them to turn over a large share of their meager earnings to insurance companies.

That’s pretty funny. So’s this: “Health care policy researchers are contradicting President Obama’s claim that a government-run health insurance program would be self-sufficient and could rely on premiums, saying it’s not possible to insure up to 30 million people with better coverage and reduce costs at the same time….Obama repeated his claim that the cost of the plan — estimated at $900 billion over 10 years — will not add to the deficit. He also said that slowing the growth of health care costs will reduce the deficit by $4 trillion ‘over the long term’.” The incoherence is breathtaking.

All that purchasing power removed from young people is going to tank the prospects of companies that sell to them now. Investors beware. Kids, about those jobs you’re not going to find, all I can say is elections have consequences.
