Missing and recorded moments
One of the things that we’ve come to expect in recent years with YouTube (can you believe it didn’t exist at the beginning of 2005?) is that every recent event has been recorded somewhere. Not so, of course. We were looking for a video of Keith Jarrett’s amazing Köln concert and, alas, there doesn’t seem to be one (the brief video above is from a concert in Tokyo). How technology continues to spoil us and sometimes create unrealistic expectations!
The Köln concert is said to be the best-selling solo piano jazz album of all time (its sales are apparently close to those of the legendary Kind of Blue). Which brings us to the great Bill Evans of course. Many years ago we heard Bill Evans at a small club in the Village. At one point he was taking requests. We asked him if he’d play Never Let Me Go, a long improvisation from his Alone solo album. He refused, and told us that he hadn’t played it since he recorded it for that album. Now even that moment has been recorded.
