Thoughts from a Democrat strategist on 2014

“These Republicans are so stupid. Did you see the Grammys? We have the youth vote. That’s the most important thing. We won them by 5.4 million votes. We can reverse the historic Republican advantage in mid-term elections, which skew GOP, white, and old. We use our organizational advantage as we did in 2012. The key is to nationalize the election and change the paradigm to get the kids to vote on a local level as they did on a national level. Make it about gay rights. Make it about war on women. Make it about global warming. Extend the voting period so millions can vote absentee — that gives us more time to get a vote from them.

Don’t talk about the economy except in terms of more college and more green energy. The Repubs are anti-woman. anti-gay and racist. Keep saying it. The media will back us. Traditional religion is a relic of the past. Make it about progress. Those who favor the values of the past are out of it. They are anti-gay racists who want to take away your birth control and imprison you on the plantation. You must go to the polls in 2014 and defeat those who oppose freeing America of its racist, anti-woman, anti-science, anti-environment past. The GOP thinks that offering up a Marco Rubio changes things. Hah! What fools. We rule, we young, we rock. We are creating a new, perfect America free of all your evils. Suck eggs, you stupid, evil Republicans. All the ideas of the founding “fathers” and later generations come from despicable doctrines grounded in white male privilege. We are the perfect generation and we renounce and will defeat the evils of the past. America was bad and repressive until we got here and we will now show you the way to a transformed and more perfect union.”

This is how countries die. Our liberal religious studies professor told us 40 years ago that Rome was successful when it directed its criticisms externally, and fell apart when the critics began to devour their own country. We don’t know if that’s precisely true, but it seems true enough in our age.

From their parents’ basements, bold words.

I still give pride of place to the 1960s Tantrum Boomers, who addressed the Great Generation (which had endured the Depression and WW2) with You terrible terrible people, what a terrible terrible world you left us! There is a poetic justice when the Boomers get their own BS thrown in their faces.

Per Victor Davis Hanson, arrogance summons Nemesis. (I wrote ‘arrogance’ instead of ‘hubris’ because hubris springs from a level of achievement which so far is lacking in the newest self-anointed generation.)
